Weather Matters - Wet & Windy Climate Change

Tuesday 29th November 2016

This evening, the Club was joined by Adrian Cowin of the Isle of Man Met Office for a engaging and very entertaining look at the Manx Weather and on a more serious note, the changes which are becoming apparent in respect of Global Warming and how those changes can be seen in our own environment.

Adrian was an excellent speaker and held his audience captivated.  This audience included, Richard, a visiting Rotarian from Frodham and Helsby Rotary Club and his wife Jean.  They chose a fantastic evening to be in Ramsey.

The outlook is definitely windy and wet with just a little bit of flooding by the look of things.

That beach front property, which is currently inland, is only a few decades away!

3S Safe Strong Secure - Domestic Violence & Abuse

Tuesday 9th August 2016

Tonight we heard from Tam Wedgwood from 3S, an Island based charity who help individuals and families affected by Domestic Abuse.

This is a subject which is relatively unknown to many because of the skill which abusers hide their actions and the affect it has on their victims.

The talk was both informative and emotive.  Hearing first hand of the difficulties which individuals can cause to others held a tight grip on the members.

This is another cause that the Club will be supporting this year.

Summer Camp

Saturday 30th July 2016

The Club welcomed visitors to Ramsey from around the world as part of the annual Rotary Summer Camp.

The group spend a couple of weeks in the UK visiting Rotary Clubs in the North West. This year, we hosted youths from various countries in Europe and others from as far afield as Macau and Australia!

The visitors were hosted over the weekend by the various Rotary Clubs on the Island. When they came to Ramsey, we took them to the RNLI Lifeboat Day to see some first hand Emergency Services work.

Our Immediate Past President, Chris Blatcher, a local Firefighter and his colleagues, demonstrated releasing someone from a vehicle.  The lucky person being released was one of our Summer Camp visitors.  We're not absolutely sure she realised what she was letting herself in for but the good news is the rescue was a complete success!

Huge thanks go to the Fire Brigade, RNLI for an amazing day, the Harbour Bistro for dinner and of course, the Rotarians who volunteered their time to make our visitors welcome.

Bird Watching at the Point of Ayre

Tuesday 26th July 2016

This evening, we were guided around the Island Aggregates site at the Point of Ayre by Sean Gray from Manx Birdlife Trust.

Sean is an incredibly knowledgeable ornithologist and was able to give very accurate advice on the extensive bird life we benefit from in the North of the Island.

The visit was followed by some excellent fare at the Grosvenor in Andreas.

Mental Health in Schools

Tuesday 19th July 2016

We heard today from Josie Corrin from Ramsey Grammar School about the difficulties faced by both Students and Teachers in todays technologically advanced world.  With a variety of issues, not always associated with Mental Health, there are many children in the school in need of assistance.

The Club is pleased to be supporting this particular cause during the Year and details will appear in the Projects for the Club.

Club Assembly

Tuesday 12th July 2016

Today we heard from President Marc and his Leads of Service when they put forwards the plans for the forthcoming year.

In attendance was District Governor Elect Eric Cowcill who visited to oversee our Clubs plans for RIBI.

There is an ambitious collection of objectives for the Club to support this year and we hope for a successful Presidency.

The first event of the Year and the weather decided to play chicken with us.It was a well excecuted day with many visitors attending, although less than expected thanks to Mannanans Cloak.
