Year 2012 - 2013
President - Grant Hill

MV Karina Cruise 2013

Tuesday 18th June 2013

Rotarians, Inner Wheel Members, family and friends took to the High Seas on the MV Karina for an evening cruise from Laxey to Ramsey.

The evening was organised by Past President Terry Groves and the evening was rounded off with an excellent meal at the Harbour Bistro.

Special mention should be made of Admiral Kerruish who arrived in full uniform and even took control in the wheel house to ensure the trip was a success!
We were also extremely fortunate to have a fellow Rotarian visitor from down under with us.

From the town of Warragul in Victoria, Barry and Barbara Baker are currently visiting the Isle of Man and staying at Beach Cottage in Maughold.

On the cruise they got a different perspective of their temporary home too!

Ramsey Duck Dash'13

Sunday 26th May 2013

A very successful Duck Dash took place on the Sulby River.

The winner, Megan Wright of Ramsey collected her prize and Certificate from President Grant and International Chairman Peter Whiteway.

We are pleased to confirm that no real ducks were put back into the storage bag either!

Rotarians visit to Rushen Club

Tuesday 14th May 2013.

Rotarians were kindly invited to attend Rushen Club for dinner where guest of honour, RIBI President attended.

The evening was a great success and all those attending thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Coffee Morning with assistance from the Inner Wheel

Saturday 27th April 2013.

The International Committee in conjunction with the Inner Wheel, held a coffee morning at Ramsey Town hall between 10am and noon.

A well attended event will bring useful funds in for the International Committee and the Inner Wheel alike.

Big thanks go to the ladies of the Inner Wheel for their invaluable assistance in making the event run well.

All Island Rotary Quiz

Thursday 25th April 2013.

Just one Ramsey team was in attendance at Braaid Hall for a 7pm start.

The team of PP Peter Hooson-Owen (driver), PP Kevin Halsall, Chris Blatcher, Mike Jelski and Marc Pons-Burt took on the almost impossible job of beating Rushen & Western Mann Rotary Club.  Sitting on the next table to last years winners was depressing for the Ramsey team as we had to mark each round for them and watched their lead over the rest of the competition extended.

Once again, Rushen & Western Mann took the honours with an unassailable lead of over 30 points.  Consolation was found for the Ramsey team in The British and Pizza King, which it turns out we were far more successful with!

Thanks go to Douglas Rotary Club and especially Gareth Hooson-Owen for his organisation of a very enjoyable evening.

Rotary vs Inner Wheel Bowling evening

Wednesday 24th April 2013.

Ramsey Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs came together for some friendly fun and competition at the Sure Strike Bowling Alley in Ramsey.  Individual honours went to Paul Taylor and the team prize went to Stella Jelski's team.  Well done everyone.

A joint meal was enjoyed afterwards at the Harbour Bistro where Ken and his team organised some excellent food and was kind enough to remain into the night to keep a couple of Rotarians/Inner Wheel ladies company!

An brilliant opportunity for the two Clubs to come together and enjoy some down time with friendly rivalry thrown in!

Rotarians Visit to Swagelok IOM

Tuesday 23rd April 2013.

An evening visit to the Swagelok premises in Douglas was attended by  members.  This company is a worldwide manufacturer of industrial quality fittings.

On speaking to President Grant the day after, it was clear that the evening was an eye opener, not just in respect of the incredible processing ability of Swagelok but moreover in respect of the business model and approach to time management and staff development.

Dinner after the event was held at the Creg-ny-Baa and excellent reports have come back about the quality of the food, especially the Gammon!

Rotarians Trip to the Gaeity Theatre

Tuesday 9th April 2013.

Members were given a guided tour of the Gaiety Theatre, which included historical information about the building and its origins.

Those attending also had the opportunity to stand on the stage to get a feel of the space.  Maybe a Rotary evening of entertainment could be in the pipeline!

The evening was rounded off at the Liverpool Arms where a lovely set meal was enjoyed.

Many thanks to the Friends of the Gaeity for their tour, the Liverpool Arms for an excellent meal and Protours for the transportation.

Roger Smith  - Horologist

Tuesday 12th March 2013

President Grant was very excited to introduce Roger Smith, the designer and watchmaker of some of the most exquisite watches in the world to speak to the Rotarians at an evening Club Dinner.

Roger, perfected his trade under the world famous Dr. George Daniels C.B.E who passed away in 2011.  The Rotarians heard of his humble beginnings and just how hard life can actually be in reaching a point where it becomes financially viable to produce £150,000+ watches.

Understandably, we were not able to see examples of his work in the flesh but we were shown a comprehensive digital display of his watches (digital displays on his watches are obviously no no's!).

The President and all Club members would like to thank Roger for his time and speech, it was quite an incredible tale.

Charter Night 2013

The Charter Night this year was on Friday, 1st March 2013 at the Masonic Hall, Ramsey  with an 8:00pm start.

President Grant Hill extended his invitation to Charter Night to His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man, Mr Adam Wood who kindly agreed to be our guest speaker.  He gave an excellent speech which kept the whole room entertained and informed at the same time.

With many distinguished guests in attendance, we were fortunate enough to have our very own, Michael Jelski as Master of Ceremonies keeping the whole evening on time.

In addition to our main speaker, we also heard from President Elect, Alan Gelling on the topic of International, President Grant of course and also Immediate Past District Governor, David Ellis gave the reply and was very well received.

The whole evening was a wonderful success and thanks of course go to Ken and his team from the Harbour Bistro who organised the food.  We were treated to Queenies with Bacon, New Zealand Lamb (for our Kiwi President) and Pavlova, all of which resulted in empty plates!

Swimarathon

On Saturday 23rd February 2013 between 12pm and 1pm, the International Committee was please to hold the Swimarathon at the Northern Swimming Pool, Ramsey.

Swimmers were asked to complete 4 lengths of the pool in return for a donation to the End Polio Now camaign.  The aim was to raise funds and awareness for the 2013 End Polio Now initiative which is organised by Rotary International.

Ramsey Rotarians were in attendance and President Grant even lead the charge with his 4 lengths being completed first!  Great effort by everyone.

Christmas Carol Singing

Starting at the Swan Public House and visiting the various Public Houses of Ramsey, the Rotarians were out in force to bring yuletide greetings to the people of Ramsey.

The evening was well attended with Santa in attendance too!

Christmas 2012 Mhelliah

The Rotary Club of Ramsey were pleased to host a Christmas Mhelliah in aid of the Ramsey Rotary Youth.

Our event was held at the Royal George Hotel in Market Square, Ramsey on Saturday 15th December 2012 and started at 8:30pm, so attendees were asked to arrive between 8:00pm and 8:30pm to allow a prompt start.

Compere for the evening was Keith Kerruish and we were very pleased with the generosity of those donating produce and items and for those making the purchases.

Well done Alan Huxham, your Committee and PP Keith Kerruish.  The Mhellia produced £1007.  The event was attended by 10 Club Members and the amount raised is amazing. Well done all concerned.

Rotary and Inner Wheel Christmas Dinner

The members of the Club and members of the Inner Wheel joined together to celebrate Christmas on Tuesday the 11th December at the Harbour Bistro.  Once again Ken and his team produced an excellent spread which was enjoyed by all.

A friendly quiz was held and some difficult questions certainly stumped some of the attendees.

Chris Blatcher has since been able to confirm that the monies raised between the raffle on the evening and also the Santa Trail held the prior weekend amounted to a fantastic £580.32 which will be donated to the Ramsey Christmas Charities Appeal.

Study Exchange

President Grant hosted a visit to Ramsey from members of the D3780 Group Study Exchange, incorporating a short visit to the Town Hall, presentation on the current phase of regeneration works around the Courthouse, and a guided tour of the new Ramsey Park Hotel.
