Scoill Ree Gorree Rotary Public Speaking Competition 2012

On the 28th February 2012, President Peter and Youth & Vocational Chairman Alan attended the public speaking competition at Scoill Ree Gorree, where the schools 12 best public speakers presented their speeches to the whole school and invited parents.
A variety of subjects were enthusiastically presented, from BMX racing to a rather graphic but informative illustration of what goes in and comes out of the human digestive system.
Overall winner was year 6 student Roan Gell who spoke about his love for fishing with runner up year 5 student Alex Walker who had researched the mythical [or perhaps not so] Big Foot or Yeti. Both are picture here with President Peter receiving their awards.
Certificates were presented to all participants and prizes of book vouchers given to each year winner and the overall winner and runner-up. The public speaking competition has run for over 30 years and is enjoyed by the children and provides valuable research and presentation skills.

Rotary Swimarathon 2012
Saturday 25th February 2012 – the world’s biggest swim! On 25th February 2012 Ramsey Rotary Club joined 91 other Rotary Clubs in 17 countries around the world in an attempt to set a new world record.
Rotary Swimarathon aimed to get as many Rotary Clubs or organisations to hold a mini “RotarySwimarathon” between 1200 – 1300 hours (GMT) on 25th February and help to break a world record for the most number of people swimming at the same time around the world.
The Club was aiming to get as many people as possible to swim just 100 metres that's (4 lengths of the pool) non-stop within that hour at the Northern Swimming Pool in Ramsey. Participants were asked to make a nominal minimum donation of £2 [£1 for under 16’s] and, if they could, raise sponsorship to support the End Polio Now campaign.
Ramsey Rotary President Peter Whiteway said “Ramsey Rotary is joining other Rotary Clubs around the world to smash a world record. This is a great opportunity for the campaign to eradicate polio, stay fit and take part in getting Rotary into the World Record Book. Anyone who can swim 100 metres is welcome to take part, but we will need under 16’s to obtain parental consent so that we can get our world record attempt verified.”

Evening with James Toseland
3rd February 2012 – The Community Committee, through Past President John Richmond, managed to secure the support of two times World Superbike Champion James Toseland as guest speaker for a fundraising dinner.
James’ diary commitments meant that the Committee were only given 2 ½ weeks notice of his availability. Organising an event in such a short timescale was a challenge most people would think twice about. Nevertheless the Community Service Committee, assisted by Social Chairman Mike Jelski, managed to organise the venue, catering, bar license, auction prizes, invitations, table plan, and sell all the tickets to run a very successful evening with a capacity audience.
Ken & Pat Devaney from the Harbour Bistro provided an excellent meal following which James spoke about his life since enforced retirement, including his engagement to Katie Melua, and performed a number of his own songs on the piano.
With the traditional heads and tails, raffle for a wheel barrel of booze and memorabilia auction the event raised over £2,700 which will be used towards youth sports initiatives in the north of the Island. The Club is very fortunate to be supported by a celebrity of James Toseland’s standing, and to have Members willing to give their time in organising and supporting events, even at very short notice.
Thanks go to Chairman Chris and the Community Service Committee, PP John Richmond and PP James Duncan, and Social Chairman Mike for all the hard work and effort before the event, and on the night, the staff of the Harbour Bistro and the Masonic Hall, and to anyone who contributed in any way to a very successful night.

Stroke Awareness Day

21st January 2012 in Ramsey Town Hall.
Between 10.00am and 2.00pm free Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate checks were undertaken.
1 in 6 people worldwide will have a Stroke in their lifetime.
Available Club Members helped out on the day.
The Rotary Club of Ramsey, in conjunction with the Stroke Association, Isle of Man Ambulance Service and Ramsey Group Practice, have participated in the annual Know Your Blood Pressure Campaign.
The Rotary Club organised a drop in event at Ramsey Town Hall and 122 local people took up the opportunity to have a free blood pressure test with a small number of people receiving advice to make a follow up visit to their GP.
The Stroke Association also had volunteers on hand to provide information about the Face, Arm and Speech Test (FAST) which helps people identify the symptoms of stroke, and to provide literature on the impact of strokes on lives.
Rotary Club Community Services Chairman Chris Blatcher said ‘the Know Your Blood Pressure Campaign is one of Rotary in Britain and Ireland’s key community projects which is run in conjunction with the Stroke Association throughout the United Kingdom. The number of people who attended for testing exceeded our expectation which was particularly pleasing especially as the IOM Ambulance Service and the Ramsey Group Practice had staff in attendance to assist the Stroke Association Volunteers with the testing."
High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke and that around 40 per cent of all strokes could be prevented if people with undiagnosed high blood pressure were identified and treated. High blood pressure can only be diagnosed by blood pressure testing and can often go undetected.

Our European visitors displayed driving skills very much akin to their nationalities, driving in France and Italy in particular should be avoided.
The karting was a great hit with the young visitors, help tremendously by the good weather. Thanks to PP Kevin for his support and to Chris Blatcher, Tim Cowin and Alan Huxham who also brought their older children out to take part. The Group were each presented with a momento of the event to take home with them. |
On Sunday morning the Youth Camp visitors were given a guided tour of the Ramsey Fire Station by Rotarian Chris and his colleagues in the Fire Service.
They were also treated to a demonstration of the vehicle rescue capability of the Ramsey fire crew who efficiently turned a Saab saloon in to a convertible. Some of the visitors were also kitted out in full fire fighting gear and used the cutting equipment themselves. After the visit the group took the Manx Electric Railway to Douglas |
Island Foundation Quiz
On the 14th of July, the Rotary Club of Ramsey sent 2 x 5 man teams to the Foundation Quiz hoping to defend last years title.
Unfortunately the title fell to Rushen and Western Mann who proved that 8 heads are actually better than 5 or 6 (despite PP Georges request for a stewards enquiry).
The winning team was captained by Past President Noel Cringle.
