Member Obituaries

Below are the obituaries for members who have sadly left us.

Past President James Duncan PHF

A born and bred Manxman, James (or Jim/Jimmy) returned to the Island in 1973 to open Ramsey Bakery with his wife Caroline.

Jim was one of the early Rotaraid Day founders and was the driving force within the Club for many years. He brought a stunt flyer and a Hot Air Balloon Club to the event with interesting results as anyone there would attest to.

Never one to cut short a conversation, Jim suffered for several years with breathing problems and a blood condition and eventually got the better of him and he died in the Isle of Man Hospice.

His loss is felt throughout the Club as he made many very close friends and was an incredible unassuming focus during meetings.

RIP Jim, 14th June 2018

Past President Mike Pugh PHF

Mike came to Ramsey from Liverpool to be the Manager of Barclays Bank in Ramsey in the very early 80's.

He was a very keen golfer and became Captain of Ramsey Golf Club during his time.

Mike was never shy in providing insights where he felt it necessary and was a valuable member of our Club.

He suffered for a couple of years with bad health before his death but never let it stop him doing what he wanted.

RIP Mike, 9th June 2016

Past President John Stanton

John came to the Island from the UK where he server as a Police Officer and on coming here, bought Allums the Jewellers in Ramsey, which he ran until forced by ill health into retirement.

He passed away in Brookfield Nursing Home in Ramsey.

He was a generous supporter of the Club before becoming a member and was popular within the Town.

RIP John, 16th August 2015

Dr Leslie Clifford Cowley PHF

A born and bred Manxman from a farming family.

Educated at King Williams College, Cliff did his National Service in the Army as a Commissioned Officer.

Cliff was responsible for the creation, during his Presidential Year, of the Ramsey Day Centre which operated on a Friday at Quayles Hall. The Day Centre is still running 30 years later at the Mitre Hotel Ramsey.

He was a GP in Ramsey from about 1969 until his retirement.

RIP Cliff, 23rd October 2014

Past President Roy Southward Merrill  PHF

We record with great sadness the passing of PP Roy, PHF, a member of our Club since 1976 and a True Rotarian.

Roy passed away peacefully in Hospice Isle of Man on the 24th November and his funeral was held on November 28th at Sulby Chapel, a village steeped in his family history and in which he grew up and lived for many of his latter years particularly.

From Roy’s first months with the Club it quickly became clear he was a true Rotarian and immensely proud to be able to help others within the north of the island and community of Ramsey. He was always at the forefront of Rotary activities and for over 17 years an indefatigable leader of the annual Rotoraid day held each summer.

He was a keen supporter of agriculture, of course, with his family farming interests, and right up to this year ensured that Rotarians offered help on the gates at the Royal Manx Agricultural show, a task he organised for many years.

Roy was exceptionally proud to be honoured with a Paul Harris Fellow receiving it at the Club’s Charter evening and making one of the most sincere and amusing speeches to the delight of all present.

He was a great friend to many, his activities with Rotary and the business of the Town over the years are too numerous to mention, and the Rotary Club of Ramsey is the poorer for his passing.

RIP Roy, 24th November 2013

Past President George Huntley PHF+1

It is with much sadness that we have been informed of the death of our good friend George Huntley.

George was recently presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship by District 1280 for his services to Rotary Foundation and a further Paul Harris Fellowship by our Club for his long and active service.

PP Keith Kerruish and PP Keith Greenland visited him at home and PP Keith Kerruish made the presentations.

RIP George, 3rd April 2012

Past President David J Craine

It is with much regret that we hear of the passing of Past President David J Craine.

Our sympathy goes to his two sons Barry and Robin.

RIP David.
