What is an "Honorary Rotarian"?
Honorary Rotarians are individuals known to the Rotary Club of Ramsey as having distinguished themselves by meritorious service to our own Community and the wider Island.
In the furtherance of their Service they are seen to support the ideals of Rotary and are considered friends of the Club. The Rotarians of Ramsey elect these individuals to Honorary Membership in recognition of this continued Service to our community at local and national level.
Rotary International is a non-political and non-religious organisation of 1.2 million members in over 200 countries. Honorary Rotarians have the right to attend as visitors to other Rotary Clubs without being a guest of a Rotarian.
Within the Rotary Club of Ramsey as an Honorary Member of the Club they are entitled to attend all meetings and enjoy the privileges of membership, but do not hold the power to vote and cannot hold an official position in the Club without becoming a full member.

At the 73rd Charter evening of the Rotary Club of Ramsey, the President, Robert Burton inducted 4 new Honorary Rotarians to the Club. These individuals have served their local community extremely well over the years and continue to do so. As such, they encompass what it takes to be Rotarians.
Andy Cowie J.P.Andy is the Chairman of Ramsey Town Commissioners and seems to have been there for years. A genuine stalwart of the Town, taking on the Civil Servants and winning!
Andy has given many years to the town of Ramsey and anyone who has met him knows he's the voice of reason within the Town Hall. A keen racer, Andy is seen every year throwing caution to the wind and taking to the MGP Course in search of trophies. When nominations were considered for this Honorary position, his long service and great knowledge of the Town put him firmly on the list! We look forward to his input. |
Dr. Alex Allinson M.H.K.Doctor to the People, man of the moment, recent move to Ministerial authority within the Government, Alex is doing it all.
A beloved local GP turned political crusader has put him firmly on the map of Ramsey for all the right reasons. Music lover, family man and now an Honorary Rotarian, the pinnacle of life itself! We look forward to Alex's support in the future. |
Ken DevaneyKen has been a long standing supporter of the Rotary Club, having been the proprietor of the Harbour Bistro throughout the many years that the Club has been based there.
Also a Trustee of the Eric & Marion Scott Trust, Ken has been a great supporter of the local community in Ramsey for many years. There's always a charitable event in the calendar for the Bistro, even now it's closed to the general public. Ken encompasses the principles of Rotary and will be a great asset to the Club. |
Lawrie Hooper M.H.K.Lawrie could be considered the quiet one of this group of Honorary Rotarians. He's not in the limelight often but read the press and you'll see he's often bringing the various Government departments to task over their legislation.
Being an MHK isn't the easiest of tasks but Lawrie is certainly making his mark during his first (of what should be many) term. A local resident, he holds regular Consultations in the Town hall to listen to the constituents and shows his mettle in the Keys. Lawrie is going to be a great Honorary Rotarian and we look forward to seeing him at events throughout the year. |
