About the Rotary Club of Ramsey

What is Rotary?

Rotary is a global network of 1.4 million neighbours, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

More locally, Rotary provides an opportunity for likeminded people to come together to make their local community better. There's so much scope that a Rotary Club can cover but it takes the will to do it.  We meet fortnightly for dinner and to discuss business and just generally to grow a sense of friendship between members.

Tuesday 14th January 1947,
Prince of Wales Hotel, Ramsey

It's a long old read but copied from the iMuseum Newspaper archives, is the entry in the Isle of Man Examiner for Friday 17th January 1947.

It details the very first official meeting of the Rotary Club of Ramsey, when it was proposed, seconded and roundly accepted that the Town should have its own Club.
There were 30 founding Members, all named in the article and the Interim President, A C (Cecil) Teare was announced (see photo, right and below).

going through the names, there will be some very recognisable individuals there, some of whom have been followed by their families into the Club.

Since that inaugural meeting, the Club has gone from strength to strength over the years, with many new members joining over the 75 years.

In recent time though, the apathy which plagues many Charitable Clubs and Organisations has also left its mark on the Rotary Club.  Once seen as a very exclusive "invite only" Club, while we have done away with many of the old systems and pre-requisites, it's still hard to attract new, younger members.

The local Community remains central to the ethos of what the Rotary Club of Ramsey does and despite the wider worldwide connections that Rotary brings from an International perspective, it remains most important for your Club that Community lies at the heart of everything we do,
